People always think I was just playing in a piano bar, I only did that for about six months. But I always feel like when we’re on stage it’s a band effort, and I was always in bands all through my teenage years. I know it’s called “Billy Joel,” I’m the guy out front singing, I do the writing - or I did the writing, anyway. I always think of myself as being in a band. It was actually a teacher in my high school that first told me that I should consider being a professional musician. I liked history, and good teachers made an impact on me. I always wanted to try to be a teacher even before I was in the music business.

But I promised myself if I ever get to a point where I can help somebody that’s trying to learn how to do this, that I would try to do that. When I first started I didn’t know a lot about the job, so I kinda had to figure it out by wire, ya know? It was hit and miss, I made mistakes, and fortunately I was able to recover from most of ’em. I’m curious why you would do those engagements, because there are so many arenas and stadiums that would like to take advantage of your visit to a particular market, for presumably a much nicer payday. Your great response, as I recall, was, ‘and that’s how you get to be a horn player in New York City,’ responding to an earlier question.

People come up, sometimes they’re good, sometimes they’re not so good. I’ve been doing these, jeez, for over 30 years now, those Master Classes. Well, that happened to be one of the times where something like that happens. I was shocked, first that you invited him to come on up in the first place, and secondly that he could play so well. The Panthers were buzzing along seamlessly when Quenneville resigned. The Panthers haven’t won a playoff round since 1996 and have long been this hard-luck and, to be blunt, unsuccessful franchise with a laundry list of instability that included continuous ownership changes, GM changes, coaching changes and, as a result, repeated overhauled “plans.” Yet in a little more than 13 months, new general manager Bill Zito entered the fray after years in Columbus and sure looked like he was pulling the right levers to change the culture and turn this often-overshadowed franchise even in its own state into a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. 28 after meeting with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman regarding his role in the Chicago Blackhawks scandal and their mishandling of a sexual assault complaint in 2010. Never in his wildest imagination did Brunette expect to ever coach the Florida Panthers, let alone take over the head job from Joel Quenneville - the man who brought Brunette to South Florida as an assistant coach in the summer of 2019 - so abruptly and in such an unforeseen manner after Quenneville was forced to resign Oct.
